Sacramento River Corridor Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project
Glenn County, CA - 690 acres - Mastication and Targeted Herbicide Application
The Sacramento River Corridor Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project began as a 340-acre mastication effort in Eastern Glenn County to reduce wildfire risk on federally managed lands. Located within the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex, the project aimed to establish strategic fuel breaks along roads, trails, and property boundaries to protect public access, first responder safety, and critical infrastructure.
In addition to reducing wildfire risk, the project improved wildlife habitat by opening up overgrown areas, enhancing native plant regeneration, and creating healthier, more diverse ecosystems for species that rely on open grassland and transitional habitat.
In partnership with the Glenn County Resource Conservation District (RCD), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and CAL FIRE, the project expanded to treat 690 acres through a combination of mechanical mastication and targeted herbicide application. This dual approach increases the long-term effectiveness of the treatment by limiting regrowth and maintaining defensible space. Diversified Resources, Inc. (DRI) was selected as the lead contractor in early 2023 and completed the on-the-ground fuel reduction work. The company worked closely with federal and local partners to deliver high-quality, environmentally responsible treatments that now serve as a model for other wildlife refuges and private landowners interested in proactive wildfire prevention.
Ongoing monitoring and maintenance will be handled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Glenn County RCD through GIS mapping and photo documentation to ensure the continued safety and effectiveness of the treated area.
This project demonstrates the impact of cross-agency collaboration and serves as an example of effective wildfire risk mitigation on public lands.
